Wastewater Data Evaluation

Large industrial facilities are typically required by LACSD to obtain wastewater samples on a daily basis.  These daily samples are typically tested for multiple parameters such as chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), and specific pollutants, resulting in the receipt of hundreds of unique data points each fiscal year for each outfall at the facility.  Due to the high volume of data received from the testing laboratory, it is to be expected that mistakes will occasionally occur from a number of sources (e.g. facility operator errors, analytical lab mix-ups, etc.).  Because of this, it is important to regularly review and evaluate wastewater analytical data to ensure the required type and number of samples are being pulled each week, the results are accurate and no permit limits have been exceeded.  When invalid or missing data is identified, it is important to work closely with the testing laboratory and facility operators to determine the source of the error and the proper course of action to resolve the issue and prevent further occurrence. Regular evaluation and subsequent issue resolution of wastewater analytical data also allows for wastewater regulatory report preparation to be as efficient, accurate and timely as possible.
